More upgrades: Credit Suisse raises Apple target

NEW YORK -- A computer Credit Suisse analyst on Friday raised his financial estimates and stock price target for Apple Inc., citing what he believes is a very strong quarter behind it and the launch of the iPad tablet ahead of it.

Bill Shope increased his earnings estimate for the quarter ending this month to $2.57 per share from $2.27, and his revenue estimate to $12.26 billion from $11.45 billion.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are on average looking for earnings of $2.37 per share on revenue of $11.8 billion.

Shope raised his 12-month price target on the stock to $300 from $275, which implies that the shares could rise about 32 percent from Thursday's closing price of $226.65.

Apple ( AAPL - news - people ) shares rose $5.09, or 2.25 percent, to $231,75 in early trading Friday.

"We believe Apple is now running well ahead of expectations in all of its key business segments," Shope wrote in a morning research note.

"Further improvement across the business and 'the potential for a very successful iPad launch next week' should help boost results throughout the year, he believes," AP reports. "Apple starts selling iPads (and delivering pre-ordered ones) on April 3. Shope expects Apple to sell 1.08 million iPads next quarter, compared to his previous estimate of 650,000."

Comment from our friends at MacDailyNews: Shope's iPad unit sales estimate for next quarter is a total joke. Why these analysts are so afraid of doing some basic math and extrapolating is beyond us. They're usually wrong anyway, so what's the problem with being at least semi-realistic? Have they begun punishing analysts who go over a bit, but lauding those who miss wildly low? 1.08 million iPad units for the whole next quarter? Seriously, Bill? Sheesh. 2:41:17 PM
